A Whisk, Spatula & Mits

Baking metaphors... that's how am putting myself back into the writing sphere. Several times over the last year or so,I've found myself jotting down my thoughts... however, none of these jots ever made it to the right place. I always ended up deleting them... perhaps thinking it's better to send them out there into the void than face their true destiny online. So here I am, bearing an interesting topic... baking metaphors. Because we can never have enough of them thrown around.

A few days ago, I was baking banana bread and usually when I psyke myself up to bake I love to think about the end product.. a yummy flavorful and rich banana bread at the end of all the tiring bit of actually baking. So I start by gathering my equipment. And my main tools of trade are three ... oven mits, a whisk and a spatula.

These 3 things are what make up a good baker if you ask me. They all play very important roles... so much so that I'd be tempted to say, no baker should be without. And yet, some do without... and the end result is that, the baking will still be just as good. For me, however, they all work together like a well-oiled machine.

Let's start with the whisk. This is usually one of the first things I use when I bake. After putting all or some of the wet ingredients together, I use this item to mix it all up. The hand whisk unlike the electronic one needs some bit of effort to use. But this is usually the fun part. If you're not tired, whisking up something feels good and has you feeling achieved when you see the end result. And such is life, a whisk here represents 'mixing' with the right people. If you move around the right circles, they'll uplift you rather than pull you down. Such people will make you feel good about yourself. They'll support and celebrate your achievements with you. And even if it might take long to find good people around you, when you finally do, you won't want to let them go.

The next item is the spatula. Now this piece of equipment has a myriad of uses. Many bakers use it in the application of frosting or icing in the decoration process. Others use it in the folding process to gently fold in ingredients into batter. I however like to use it as a scraper to transfer the batter from the mixing bowl into the baking dish and boy do I love the feeling... Scraping is actually it's primary use and it's honestly my best part of baking because it usually signals the end of the mixing process and the start of the 'cooking' process. Rubber spatulas work best in that they do the job completely. You usually don't have to worry that you'll waste any batter because it gets all of it off the bowl. And after transferring the batter, the spatula can be used to smooth the surface to ensure even distribution. Spatulas in life represent the ability to apply yourself in things that matter. Being part of something important. It means not wasting time in things that won't help you move ahead but allowing yourself to be used in something worthwhile. It can be a good job, good company or even good decisions.

The last item is the mits... oven mits. Now this item, most people find that they don't need it. It's usually substituted with regular kitchen cloths. However, what people don't realise is that mits have been made to particularly protect the hands from burns. Regular cloths might work but only if you're very careful. Oven mits are used in the final process of baking and are rather important. They help you to open the oven without fear of accidentally burning yourself. They help to ensure you can safely remove the baked item from the oven onto the counter for cooling. And as in life, mits represent protecting yourself from things or people that can harm you. Staying away from such things or people is your only sure bet of keeping yourself safe.

I bet you won't look at these baking equipment the same way again! ☺️

Love, S
